Clear paint protection films that can heal themselves and after they have been damaged or scratched are exceedingly cool pieces of vehicle paint protection technology, and how do they actually work?

Thanks to the video below put together by Jason Fenske of Engineering Explained, we get to find out. The latest paint protection films use three layers of the compound and in each sheet to ensure your vehicle’s paint doesn’t get damaged from rock chips, scratches, and other impacts.

The first is the adhesive so the film sticks to the vehicle, the second is thick polyurethane to mitigate damage from outside forces, the third (and most important) is the clearcoat that protects the polyurethane from discoloring.

But how is a film able to heal itself? Jason Fenske explains that scratches on the surface is a coat being rearranged, not damaged, and that the application of heat gives it enough energy to return to its flat, and normal look.

But that is only the very basic explanation. Watch for yourself to check out the entire process, how the film is applied to your car.
