The Fast Lane Cars tried to answer a rather interesting question many car nerds wondered about for some time. What is with the Mercedes-Benz SL and is the Mercedes SL450 actually fast enough to carry a title of the sports cars?
This is the least expensive and the least powerful SL available and it starts at just over 86,000, while the most expensive cars go for more than $200,000. Cool.
362hp and 369 lb-ft of torque with 9-speed automatic transmission. That is what one gets with an entry level SL. It is a fine car for sure, but the Twin Turbo V6 inside does not sound as well as a V8 and it does not have the pouch we’d expect from the sports car. Or we thought it does not.
According to The Fast Lane Cars, the entry level SL is fast enough. They tested the car one mile above sea level meaning that they, of course, could not meet the performance figures Mercedes-Benz stated in the brochure. That is 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds. However, our guy from The Fast Lane Cars proved that even at one mile above sea level, where the air is much thinner, the entry level Mercedes-Benz SL450 can do 60 mph in 5.5 seconds. At sea level, you are looking at a car that can do 60 mph in 4.5 seconds.
And in here, you will find out how different the Mercedes-Benz SL450 is with various modes selected. Quite interesting.
