Engine braking refers to the mechanism in diesel cars which slows down the vehicle by releasing the air trapped inside the cylinders of the engine.

What exactly happens is as the throttle is pulled, a vacuum is formed which is a result of insufficient air given by the cylinders. Therefore, there is actually no air to be compressed. Hence the myth that compression causes engine braking was actually wrong.
